Top 20 Fanservice Moments in Anime & Manga
Written by: ClayDragon & Shiggins
Fanservice is a near-universal constant in anime these days. Most shows have at least one episode or scene where the characters (usually female) get into compromising positions, have wardrobe malfunctions, or just straight up forget how to put on half of their clothes. And so (because we want more views), we've put together a list of the most memorable fanservice scenes in anime and manga, based on how impactful, memorable and over-the-top they are.
To avoid embarrassing situations, it's probably best to make sure you're alone before reading this list.
As is this the case with many of these lists, SPOILER ALERT. You have been warned.
20.) Sexy Jutsu (Naruto) (Written by: ClayDragon)
Naruto got off to a great start, didn't it? The very first jutsu we saw was none other than Naruto's very own invention – the Sexy Jutsu. Simply put, this technique transforms the user into a naked girl, with some convenient smoke protecting her modesty. There are variations of this jutsu, such as combining it with the Shadow Clone jutsu to create multiple girls, but the basics remain the same: use this jutsu against an unsuspecting man, and sit back and watch the nosebleeds.
I'm not even going to start asking questions about the biological aspects of this. |
Surprisingly enough, the Sexy Jutsu made a comeback during the battle between Team 7 and Kaguya. Towards the very end of the series, the heroes were faced with a villain who could counter pretty much every move thrown at her, so what did Naruto do? He used the Sexy Reverse Harem jutsu to create a group of handsome naked men in order to distract Kaguya while he launched a surprise attack. The real shocker, though? It worked. So there you have it – not even insanely powerful demon-women are immune to the Sexy Jutsu.
Mind you, she had been sealed away on her own for ages. She wouldn't have so much as seen a man for hundreds of years. |
19.) Water Gun Fight (Noucome) (Written by: Shiggins)
Noucome is an odd duck for me to include in this list, with its lacklustre plot and stereotypical characters, but this is a scene that just can't be ignored. Even though the series is about a man who has God basically ruin his life by putting in random choices for him to do at any moment and he has to do them or else, (it's very hit-and-miss), the series somehow manages to devote time to one of anime's favourite locations; A water park.
Your subtlety here is amazing, Noucome. |
It's been ages since I watched this forgettable series, but it's hard to forget when a girl had a water gun fight with the fake-tits rich girl because the audience apparently demanded it. This scene contains lots of squirting, bouncing, physics-breaking and obvious innuendos, and it's almost hilarious... if it wasn't so dumb and created for the sole purpose of arousing your water sprinklers.
Ladies? Care to weigh in on this gif? As in, do those do that during this? |
18.) Bloody Arousing (Strike the Blood) (Written by: ClayDragon)
What is it with vampires and sex? Since the early 1900's vampires have been linked to sex fairly often, and Strike the Blood's Kojou Akatsuki is no exception. As an incredibly powerful vampire, Kojou needs to drink people's blood in order to use his full powers and recover from any injuries. The catch is that, in order to be able to drink blood, Kojou needs to be turned on (no, I don't get it either). And since 80% of this show's cast is female, there's no shortage of girls lining up to strip down for Kojou so he can drink their blood.
I wonder how the show would have turned out if Kojou was actually gay? |
This is such a common occurrence that it's impossible to single out one specific moment. Since most girls in the show are in love with Kojou, and since they find the act of having their blood sucked quite pleasurable (again, I don't get it either), there is at least one moment in every arc where Kojou has to stare at, grope, or otherwise 'enjoy the presence' of the nearest available girl. Bram Stoker must be rolling in his grave.
Because the viewers demand it! |
17.) Mashiro in the Morning (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo) (Written by: Shiggins)
Remember, kids. Be an antisocial weirdo who flashes a man, and one day they will fall in love with you. That is what Sakurasou taught me, and I am assuming it works because when has anime ever lied to me? Anyway, yeah. Cliche weird girl moves in to a place where bland-ish protagonist lives, as well as other characters, and she starts her mornings naked.
Ironically, one of her most well-known phrases is "I believe in panties." |
It's a romance series, so of course it has fanservice. For some reason, he needs to force her to change into clothes and when you say it like that, it makes you wonder why he fell for her... but nevermind. She's naked, this series loves a bit of melodrama or fanservice, depending on your episode, and the protagonist freaks out to try his best to fix this. Honestly, this scene is very blatant and reveals a lot about her character (pun intended) but the only thing I actually liked about this series was the non-main girl.
Also known as 'our honourable mention'. |
16.) "Thank you, Boobies!" (Space Dandy) (Written by: Shiggins)
When a series literally starts with the protagonist floating in space and debating to his sidekick robot about why asses are better than breasts, before choosing to go to a bar literally explained to us by a narrator as a "breastaurant", you know you're in good hands. And as Space Dandy looks upon the waitresses with their flirting and outfits, all he can do is thank this glorious bar.
Anyone else get the image of Zapp Brannigan trying to fly this thing? |
A regular place for Space Dandy to visit, Boobies provides memberships, benefits to long-paying customers, charming service and a very non-subtle approach to attracting men to visit them again. It's the kind of place you can see a movie studio making, because only someone desperate would make a location this glaringly obvious for your penis and money. Then again, it works so why should I criticise it? It's a hilariously over-the-top location in a hilarious, over-the-top anime.
"See, if you're enlightened like I am, then you know the real show is down below: the booty, baby! That's where it's at! Nothing trumps the rump, my friend. Anyone who can't see that is either blind or a fool. That's why I say enough with this mass boob hysteria. It's time to set things right. It's time to give the ass the respect it deserves!" |
15.) Cute Bath Time (Cute High Earth Defence Club LOVE) (Written by: Shiggins)
How this getting a season 2, but we still don't have a Dangan Ronpa 2 anime or a well-made full version of Negima? I watched this damn man-love series and yes, it's adorable but the story isn't exactly top-notch. It's as if anime fans only care about letting out their sexual frustrations and never focus on story... Oooh.
Is there ANY point to that towel at this rate? Honestly?
A weirdly-popular genre that is starting to get a cult following, the Magical Boys are taking over. Thanks to crossdressing and muscles, girls can enjoy the cliches of Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica, but with the added bonus of sparkling men. It's like Twilight for perverts. And in Cute High Earth, they push the limit by literally having a bathscene in every episode. Take your pick for any of them, but since there were so many to choose from, I'm personally going for the one associated with the image below this paragraph.
...Stop judging me, ClayDragon! |
14.) The Snake is Awake (Monster Musume) (Written by: Shiggins)
I'm not a fan of Monster Musume, so I can't pretend to know all of the fanservice-filled scenes of this pus, but I am aware of the one everybody probably knows because... well, it's the first scene of the series! Main protagonist wakes up, is slightly bland, and is being held tight by an aroused snake-woman that won't let go.
Oh, the puns. The many, many puns.
Just like in every harem anime, the snake is one of many love interests that just exists purely to be turned on by the completely forgettable man, but she is special with her dedication. Every attempt he tries to escape her clutches somehow manages to tweak the right spot, and she finds herself even more turned on until... the scene comes to a climax and stops.
...HOW?! |
13.) Hot Springs (Hunter x Hunter) (Written by: ClayDragon)
Virtually every shonen series out there has fanservice. Some more than most, certainly, but it'll be there. Which is why it was very surprising to see that Hunter x Hunter looked like the exception to this rule – until this moment. During their time on Greed Island, Gon and Killua teleport to a player with a suspicious username, only to show up right when the player – actually Hisoka – is in the middle of taking a bath in a hot spring. Who said fanservice can't feature men?
"We need an adult!" |
Hisoka being Hisoka, he's in no hurry to put any clothes on, and so we're treated to a long look at his ripped body, including some rather…revealing shots. He's also more than happy to see Gon and Killua again, a feeling that is in no way reciprocated. That being said, at least Biscuit seemed a bit more appreciative of the view.
Did he have to say it with the heart symbol?
12.) Hot Springs (Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) (Written by: ClayDragon)
When Dungeon first aired, the internet latched on to Hestia's character, for rather understandable reasons. Granted, her costume and design probably had something to do with it, but still. Of course, this being anime, it was only a matter of time until she was shown in a bath/spa/hot spring. And lo and behold, that's exactly what happened – with the added bonus of virtually every other female character being there too.
Is this meant to be an intentional Venus de Milo reference?
As every one of his potential love interests takes a bath, Bell ends up accidentally falling in (as you do). However, as opposed to beating him up as you would expect, the girls react with amusement instead, leading to Bell getting so embarrassed that he does some Jesus-level water running to get away. It's only a short scene – less than two minutes overall – but its purpose is more than clear. I wonder how much Hestia's popularity surged after this episode?
Probably a lot. I'm guessing an awful lot. |
11.) Bulma's Deal (Dragon Ball) (Written by: Shiggins)
You know, it's funny to think the Dragon Ball franchise once had fanservice. It's such a battle-focused delight that you almost forget it once made its underage girl reveal as much as possible. Luckily, they stopped when she reached the legal age in western countries... Let's ignore I said that and move on to possibly the most infamous example of fanservice on our list.
Turtle is 999 years old. Why does he even get bothered by stuff like that at his age? |
In exchange for Master Roshi's help, Bulma reluctantly agreed to show her panties to the old pervert, that would one day inspire beloved creep Jiraiya. However, Bulma was unaware that a young Goku, who had never seen a girl before, had taken off her panties while she slept earlier because he was confused as to where her balls were, which meant she accidentally gave Roshi a far grander reveal than she ever meant to... wow, is this really the same series that gave us Frieza, Beerus and an evil Winnie the Pooh?
I'm a man, so I can never be truly sure, but... Wouldn't this at least make her wake up and ask "ow, what the fuck?!" |
10.) Hot Springs (Nisekoi) (Written by: ClayDragon)
Has there ever been a romcom series in which the male lead didn't see at least one of the female characters naked? I'm trying to think of one, but I can't. Nisekoi certainly doesn't count, since it just decided to have Raku see almost every girl in a state of undress at the same time. After being tricked by Chitoge's overzealous bodyguard, Raku accidentally enters the female side of the hot springs. Thankfully, the only person there at the time is Chitoge herself, who is rather understanding given the circumstances.
No fanservice in this image. I just wanted an excuse to use this gif. |
Before Raku has the chance to escape, the bath is filled with every other girl in the series, forcing him to hide in increasingly ridiculous ways. Thankfully, he notices a hole through which he can escape to the boy's side, but thanks to Onodera getting in the way, he gets an eyeful of her as well. There's another hot springs scene later on in the series that has even more girls, but the first misadventure is certainly the most memorable.
At least Tsugumi's sensible, she's still wearing a towel. |
9.) Episode 6 (Gurren Lagann) (Written by: Shiggins)
Most of this list are just short scenes or repeating offenders, but this is that rare exception where it's near-impossible to narrow it down to just one moment. So we had to just include the entire episode of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann where the characters all went to a mysterious bathhouse that may hold more secrets than they realise.
Hey, I can see his animal from here! |
Probably the most hilarious adventure on this list, Kamina, Simon, Yoko and the others find themselves being welcomed by gorgeous women and show them to a hot spring, where the boy's section is walled off from the girl's section. Kamina wants to see these girls, and trust me when I say "at any cost". He'll take a finger up the arse, he'll literally give in to villain's demands, and he'll forget that there are monsters in the area, all so he could see just a glimpse of Yoko's 'yokos'. The result is a hysterical and flamboyant episode that perfectly suits the series, despite going into intense levels of fanservice that the series never crosses again.
How does a robot suit get shocked? |
8.) Love Rape (Shimoneta) (Written by: Shiggins)
Shimoneta is a series that actually uses fanservice as an important part of the plot. If anything, this series is about a person's right to be one with the fanservice, and utilise it for their own personal enjoyment. So it's only appropriate for a series like this to begin a budding romance by breaking into their wannabe-lover's home and begin the raping process.
Sorry, dumb-as-shit losers on the internet. But rape is rape. Gender doesn't matter, it's still bad. |
Okay, so maybe it's not a willing romance! Anna Nishikinomiya went from dignified student council president, into massive yandere freak with a love for molestation and sexual assault. She must be stopped, and this is the scene that showed exactly why. Stripping naked, tying a character down, and only stopping because a friend walked in, Anna is nuts and there are many scenes that prove it, but this one was the first and the worst. And the most revealing, so there's that too.
Is this proof that women shouldn't have power? Hmm... |
7.) Wearing Senketsu (Kill la Kill) (Written by: Shiggins)
You knew this one was coming somewhere. The surprisingly brilliant Kill la Kill series couldn't go forgotten in this list, due to the excess of... well, almost everything Ryuko Matoi has to offer actually. Donning the super-suit Senketsu, Ryuko begins her journey to find her father's killer and impale them on a big scissor-sword as revenge!
Our survey says...this makes no sense. |
Senketsu's existence in itself is fanservice. An outfit that makes no sense to the naked eye, but is actually justified within the story so as to give it an excuse to be designed in this ridiculous fashion. It's the fanservice that almost stopped me watching Kill la Kill, and the outfit I forever resent for nearly making me lose such an experience. Senketsu is an undeniably iconic creation, and his ability to fanservice the bollocks off of this series is an unmistakable phenomenon that gets it on our list.
Well, at least the series is about equal exposure...right? |
6.) The Meddlesome Cat (Bakemonogatari) (Written by: ClayDragon)
Were you expecting the requisite Monogatari entry to be the infamous toothbrush scene from Nisemonogatari? Yes? Well tough, because no matter how sexualised that bit is, it is not fanservice. A busty woman running around in loose pyjamas and acting like a cat? That's fanservice. After being possessed by a cat spirit, Hanekawa runs away from home, resulting in Koyomi cycling around town trying to find her. When he does, this is the sight that greets him:
This is like, three different fetishes rolled into one. |
Since the cat spirit is a manifestation of Hanekawa's repressed emotions, it tends to possess her whenever she's particularly stressed, and every time it shows up the audience is treated to a number of revealing shots of the cat girl. Of course, this being Bakemonogatari, she's still more than capable of killing a normal person, and even makes a decent attempt on Koyomi's life. Cute and deadly.
Pyjamas not your thing? How about lingerie instead? |
5.) Dress Break (Highschool DxD) (Written by: Shiggins)
We all need a true hero to follow as they go about their amazing quest and become true warriors in their own environment, thanks to a noble goal that they want to pursue. In this truly wondrous series, our valiant hero Issei wishes to gather a harem of women! What a man! What an absolute idol! And not misogynistic or sexist in the slightest, am I right?
I want to hang a poster of him up on my wall, so I and my future offspring can have someone to look up to.
Of course, every hero has their villains and how dare any woman confront our star! So he uses the powers of the demon and works his damn hardest, so he can achieve the power of... DRESS BREAK! Yes, the power to destroy any clothing that he chooses. Women will fall before him, and you'll just have to be in awe because he is better than all of you combined! It's the perfect technique for the perfect man.
*sheds a tear as I salute proudly* |
4.) Foodgasms (Shokugeki no Soma) (Written by: Shiggins)
Yummy, yummy, yummy, I got food in my... genitals? Yes, if this series wants you to believe anything, it's that food is literally better than sex. Like every manga, this series chose one element and focused the fuck out of it and exaggerated it to amazing levels. Naruto had ninjas, Magi had Aladdin, and Shokugeki no Soma has food.
How the hell did Shonen Jump approve of this? |
Just by eating a bite of the properly-prepared meal, you can find your soul literally exploding with ecstasy, overcome with lustful desires and spellbound by the tastes within your mouth. Apparently, food is something only meant to be enjoyed by those over the legal age of consent, because it gets really inappropriate whenever this stuff is on screen. We'll let you pick your favourite foodgasm, but they're all the same. And they all deserve a mention on this messed-up list.
Basically how I react after a Pizza Hut. |
3.) Bath of the Dead (Highschool of the Dead) (Written by: Shiggins)
One of the most legendary series on this list, HotD is centered on a bunch of badass girls and two dull guys fighting zombies. It's gory, fanservicey, quirky, fanservicey, action-oriented and it has some fanservice. Oh and it has fanservice too. I mean, Jesus. I'm surprised there's actually zombies in this story. While I did really want to put in the epically-hilarious physics-breaking bullet scene, this one unfortunately just trumps it with its barrage of boobs.
Written by a man, you say? How unexpected... |
To be honest, you already know this scene. If you've seen any anime with fanservice, you have seen this scene. There aren't any zombies or dark moments of drama that you would think go alongside an apocalypse run by the undead, but it's girls having a bath. Soap bubbles, grabbing breasts because they're bigger than yours, cold water... It's all here. Something tells me we'd never see this in any other zombie series, which is a shame because it would make The Walking Dead interesting again.
See, now you're imagining Rick and Daryl doing this. You're welcome. |
2.) Hot Springs (Fairy Tail) (Written by: ClayDragon)
Are you noticing a trend with some of these entries? Yes, anime and manga certainly love their hot springs, don't they? After a rather lacklustre adventure during the Sun Village arc, Team Natsu are invited to take a bath in the hot springs near Warrod Sequen's house. Once the girls have gone in, however, they discover that the guys are already there, and thus begins a manga scene so full of fanservice that the anime had to tone it down.
And given how bad the Fairy Tail anime is with fanservice, that's saying something. |
Hiro Mashima is no stranger to fanservice, but this scene takes it to extremes. Underwater views, convenient speech bubble placement, Erza and Natsu washing each other…it's easily the most explicit fanservice scene in Fairy Tail, and that's saying something. Unless you're watching the anime of course, in which case the exposition in this chapter is given during a campfire session instead. Which really raises the question of why Mashima decided to put in the hot springs at all…
My current theory is: 'because he's a pervert'. |
1.) The Race (UQ Holder) (Written by: Shiggins)
On March 14th 2012, the world was shattered as the final chapter of Negima had to be forcefully rushed and half-finished due to a dispute between a studio and a writer. 2013 was when we were given the sequel to Negima, in the form of the protagonist's grandson Tota as he went off on his adventure to find the answers to Negima's unanswered questions, and get a story of his own. And just like a good sequel should do, it ups the ante everywhere. More tension, more plot twists, more magic and more fanservice, to a near-psychotic degree actually. And the UQ Holder event that covered over 5 chapters is the winner of our fanservice list.
The starting outfits...and it all goes downhill from here. |
Just like every harem genre, the love interests all want to prove themselves for the same man. You have the obtuse one, the aggressive one and the cute one, all wanting a slice of the pie. In this series, the choice was to race, with each of the trio having a clone of Tota as their own personal navigator and bodyguard. Lethal spells are not allowed, which means the spell to literally blow away clothing is your only source of attack. And honestly, that's all you need to say. Is it relevant to the plot? Not really. Is it relevant to the characters though? Surprisingly, yes. Is the fanservice overly blatant, smacking you in the face with almost pornographic levels of touching, positioning and determination? You better believe it. If you think an occasional chapter or two of character-driven fanservice can ruin your good time reading a manga, try being a fan when that's literally all you get for several chapters in a row! You will not survive!
Just one of many 'out of context' pictures that I'm sure this article gave you to 'enjoy'. |
